Lay Your Phone To Rest

Most of us want to step away from stress scrolling and spend more time being present with the ones we love, but it’s hard. On average Americans are on their phones three hours a day, checking them 58 times–adding up to 50 days a year.During the pandemic, this was me, I was obsessively checking my phone throughout the day.I was looking for an email, for a “like”, for a tiny fragment of good news. It was a constant search for self worth, connection or meaning, that was never really there. It was keeping me from being present with my life and family, and the frustration culminated to  the point where I actually thought to myself “I just wanna kill this thing!” Thus, Coffone Co., the world's first coffin-inspired phone rests were born.

Like the old adage out of sight, out of mind, it really helps to have a place to keep your phone, a place to go back to when you’re ready. I made the first few for myself, but after talking to friends with the same concerns, I thought, “more people could use these.” This handcrafted coffin-shaped art object–with charging capability–is made from quality reclaimed wood and is aimed to help you be more intentional with your smartphone usage. People who used their smartphone 45 minutes less per day for four months showed increased life satisfaction, increase in physical activity, and a decrease in depression and anxiety, according to a 2022 study by the Journal of Experimental Psychology.

I pop my phone in the coffin at night, when I have family and friend gatherings (see the family plot), and when I’m feeling overwhelmed and need a screen and scrolling break. The quality reclaimed wood, the plush velvet, and the magnetic lid all help set the intention to step away from your smartphone, and it’s helped me stay more connected with myself, my friends, and my family.

I’m not saying you have to bury your phone 6 feet under, but you can use this coffin-shaped phone rest to spend less time per day scrolling, letting the phone and your brain recharge. Lose distraction, and find more time. It’s been a huge help for me, and hopefully for you, too.
